Chief RYA Cruising Instructor

Job Purpose

We are seeking an experienced and inspiring Chief RYA Cruising Instructor to lead our Cruising Centre. The successful candidate will oversee all RYA practical and shore-based cruising courses, ensuring the highest standards of safety, instruction, and compliance. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines operational oversight, staff development, and strategic input to continuously enhance the training experience at DOSC.

Job Responsibilities

• Lead and motivate a team of cruising instructors to deliver engaging, safe, and high-quality RYA training.
• Support course scheduling and resource planning in coordination with the Sailing Administration team.
• Oversee the maintenance, readiness, and housekeeping of all training yachts to ensure operational safety and RYA compliance.
• Maintain exceptional standards of safety, professionalism, and customer service.
• Collaborate closely with the Sailing Centre Principal on operational and strategic matters.
• Ensure compliance with RYA inspection, accreditation, and audit requirements.
• Manage and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and internal documentation.
• Lead the recruitment, onboarding, and professional development of cruising staff.
• Foster a positive, inclusive, and performance-driven team culture.

Essential Qualifications:

• RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Instructor (Sail)
• Valid VHF Operator’s Licence, First Aid Certificate, and ENG1 Medical
• STCW certification

Experience:

• Minimum two years’ experience as a Chief Instructor or equivalent leadership role at an RYA Training Centre
• Proven track record in delivering RYA Cruising Scheme courses and mentoring instructors

Skills & Knowledge:

• Deep understanding of RYA standards, syllabus structure, and inspection requirements
• Strong leadership, communication, and organisational abilities
• Proficient in operational logistics, safety management, and vessel upkeep
• Passionate about providing an exceptional student experience
