Position Overview: We are seeking skilled and responsible Boat Drivers for the upcoming summer season. The Boat Driver will be responsible for safely operating motorized boats to transport campers and staff across our camp's lake or waterway. This position offers a unique opportunity to play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of campers while fostering a love for water-based activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely operate motorized boats to transport campers, staff, and equipment across the camp's lake or waterway.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations, including maintaining a proper lookout, obeying speed limits, and avoiding hazards such as other boats, swimmers, or obstacles.
- Conduct pre-departure safety checks on boats, including inspecting fuel levels, engine operation, and safety equipment such as life jackets and fire extinguishers.
- Ensure the safe boarding and disembarking of passengers, providing assistance as needed, particularly for young or inexperienced campers.
- Monitor weather conditions and water activity, making decisions regarding boating operations based on safety considerations.
- Communicate effectively with campers, staff, and other boat drivers to coordinate transportation schedules and ensure the efficient and timely movement of individuals and supplies.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of boats, docks, and boathouse facilities, including routine maintenance tasks such as fueling, cleaning, and minor repairs.
- Serve as a positive role model for campers, demonstrating responsible and courteous behavior while on the water and adhering to camp rules and policies.
- Assist with other camp activities and duties as assigned by camp leadership, contributing to the overall success of the camp program.
Qualifications:
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Previous experience operating motorized boats, preferably in a camp, recreational, or commercial setting.
- Knowledge of boating safety practices and regulations, including navigation rules, emergency procedures, and basic first aid.
- Strong swimming ability and comfort working in and around water.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with campers of diverse backgrounds and ages.
- Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure, particularly in emergency situations.
- Flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Must pass a background check and adhere to all camp policies and procedures.
